My little Sophie Bean decided to audition for the chorus this year at her school and got in, but this being Los Angeles it was no ordinary public elementary school chorus. This chorus, and the entire music program for that matter, has been officially adopted by a neighbor, Matt Sorum (known to many as the drummer of Guns N Roses).

Before I knew it this chorus had become an official group called The Changels tasked with the beautiful and important mission of helping Matt raise money to keep the arts in public schools through his non-profit Adopt The Arts that he created with another neighbor and dear friend, Abby Berman.

Plans were made for them to start recording popular songs and creating music videos and Sophie was beside herself with excitement about it all, except for one thing….she didn’t have a solo and she desperately wanted one because the song they had chosen was one of her all time favorites.

This was a great opportunity for me to teach Sophie all about being happy for others and their successes knowing that her day would come, which she did and got re-excited about just being a part of the thing at all. And then on the fateful day of the recording, as she was minding her business doing her thing, Matt singled her out. He asked the teacher, “does Sophie have a solo? Can we get her one? I’d like to hear her try this.” And boom…a little star was born. She sang all night that night, in fact, I think she sung herself right to sleep with happiness.

Abby Berman and Matt Sorum, I have to say that there is just no way to express my gratitude for all that you both are doing. I believe art education is truly important for all kids, as it exercises a different part of the brain that is just as crucial, if not more so, in this information age we are living in where critical thinking skills are becoming more and more important, but for some kids it’s even more than that. For some kids like my little Sophie, who were born with the artist gene and may not always fit in with the rest of the kids or shine in the traditional areas, it is an opportunity to feel normal and an opportunity to experience where they shine. Thank you for giving the kids those life changing moments. They need all the love and support they can get.

Without further ado please enjoy Sophie’s big debut as a singer, singing Wide Awake by Katy Perry. It made me cry happy tears.
